Citizen Promaster Marine Automatic Diver 200m Green Dial

2 Mins read

Looking at the specific segment of accessible, ultra-robust diver’s watches, there’s a name that should always be part of the discussion: Promaster. Indeed, the Promaster Marine Automatic Diver is one of the most enduring watches produced by Citizen, but also a watch with a huge fan-base… And rightfully so. The Promaster is a distinctive, highly capable, robust and functional dive watch with a very fair price. This year, the new Citizen Promaster Marine Automatic Diver 200m Green Dial, and Super-Titanium (reference NY0100-50XE) is packed with more robustness than ever and a stylish new look.

The iconic 1982 Citizen Professional Diver 1300m. To deal with saturation diving, Citizen opted for an ultra-hermetic, rust-resistant titanium case.

The Promaster has been a pillar of Citizen’s catalogue since 1989, a serious contender in the market for accessible watches made for professional sportsmen and adventurers. The idea of the ultra-robust dive watch can even be traced back to 1982 when Citizen launched the Professional Diver 1300m – the titanium watch with the greatest water-resistance back then. Even though extreme in terms of specifications and looks, this watch paved the way for the design of the Promaster collection. It also introduced titanium for Citizen dive watches, something that has to do with today’s model.

The Promaster Marine Automatic Diver 200m is one of the brand’s most enduring models and was presented in the mid-2000s – the original reference NY0040-09EE is still in production. The new model presented this year, the green NY0100-50XE is the direct descendant of this watch and retains most of its traits and features. But it also adds the brand’s Super-Titanium alloy – a registered trademark for a material that combines the brand’s titanium-processing technologies and the Duratect surface-hardening process –  to an already impressive technical package. Lightweight (about 60% lighter than steel) and super-comfortable on the wrist, it is also corrosion-resistant and scratch-resistant (more than 1,000Hv hardness, about five times superior to that of stainless steel).

On this new Promaster NY0100-50XE, the case, the caseback, the bezel and the entire bracelet are made from Super-Titanium ensuring robustness and comfort and the exceptional lightweight properties of the metal. The entire watch weighs about 110 grams (when most steel divers are more in the 200 grams). With its signature notched profile, the bezel is equipped with a black 60-minute scale. Protected by a mineral crystal, the Promaster Marine Automatic Diver is a true diver, ISO 6425 certified, with a screw-down crown at 8 o’clock and 200m water-resistance.

Besides the use of Super-Titanium, the real deal with this new edition is the green sunray-brushed dial, offering a fresh and stylish look to this ultra-robust piece. The dial features oversized luminous plots, and the hours and central seconds hands are highlighted in red. The classic day-date complication at 3 o’clock is retained.

Inside the case is the brand’s in-house Calibre 8203, an automatic movement running at 3Hz and providing about 40/45 hours of power reserve. Accuracy is rated at +/- 20 sec/day. This Citizen Promaster Marine Automatic Diver 200m is worn on a Super-Titanium bracelet with a folding clasp and diver’s extension with two-pushers (with about extra 2cm for the bracelet).
